On 6 October 2016, at the age of 19, Ruturaj Gaikwad made his first-class debut for Maharashtra during the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy.

He could not play many matches that season because he got injured during a match, due to which he had to undergo surgery and leave the Ranji season.
