What Is A Super Over?

When the match is tied, then the Super Over is used. This rule came in 2008. Before this, the ball-out method rule was implemented. India defeated Pakistan in a ball out in the first T20 World Cup held in 2007. When the score is equal, then the Super Over rule is applied.

Under this, two teams choose three batsmen and one bowler to bowl 6 valid balls. At the end of two overs, the team scoring the most runs is declared the winner. All runs scored by the batsman and wickets taken by the bowler in the Super Over are not counted in their career statistics.

Beginning Of Super Over

Super Over was started in T-20 cricket in 2008. Before this, the “Ball-out” method was used. It was started in one-day international cricket in 2011.

“Ball out” in cricket is just like a penalty shootout in football. In ball out, 5 players of each side throw 1 or 2 balls and try to knock down any one of the three stumps. The team whose players knock down more wickets wins. Keep in mind that when the bowler throws the ball, no one plays him as a batsman.

But if the players of both teams knock down an equal number of wickets, then bowling continues until there is a difference in the number of wickets falling.

Meaning Of Super Over:

Super Over is used when the score of both teams becomes equal. This method is used to bring results in T-20 and one-day matches. This type of “Super Over” is also called an Eliminator or one-over-per-side eliminator.

Super Over Rule:

A maximum of 3 players from a team can participate in the Super Over (which has to be told before starting batting). Two as the opening pair and one in case of any other player getting out. That is, a total of three batsmen can come to the crease. Now, let’s see the Super Over Rule:

  1. Each team is given one over to play.
  2. The team that bats in the second innings of the match comes to bat first in the Super Over. The same has happened in the World Cup 2019 as well. Before playing the Super Over, New Zealand batted first but England batted first in the Super Over.
  3. No single player can do both batting and bowling.
  4. Innings end as soon as 2 wickets of any team fall in the Super Over.
  5. If the Duckworth-Lewis rule is followed, then the team that scores more runs on the last ball of the “Super Over” wins.
  6. The bowling team chooses from which “end” it will bowl.
  7. If the Super Over is also tied, then the team that has hit more fours in the entire match wins. The winner of the World Cup 2019 was also decided in this way.
  8. If the match is also tied in the Super Over, then before 2010, the team that hit more sixes in the Super Over used to win.
  9. The runs and wickets scored in the Super Over are not added to the record.
  10. So, from the above analysis, it becomes clear that the match which cannot be decided in the normal way, is decided with the help of the Super Over. Thus, it is clear that the match with the Super Over is very exciting.
