Slow Over Rate In IPL 2025: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made many rules and regulations to run the Indian Premier League (IPL) smoothly. There are strict rules especially for Slow Over Rate to ensure that the match ends on time.

What Is Slow Over Rate In IPL 2025?
A slow over rate means bowlers finish overs in more time than the stipulated time. If there are fewer overs than the average number of overs bowled in an hour, the captain is fined under this rule. According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), 14.11 overs have to be bowled in ODIs and T20s within an hour and 14.28 overs in Tests.
It Is Necessary To Bowl This Many Overs In IPL
It is played in different formats. There are two strategic timeouts, in which two and a half minutes are spent. The bowling side has to maintain an over rate of 14.11. If this does not happen then the captain of the bowling team is fined 12 lakhs for the first time.
If this happens again, the amount of the fine increases from 12 to 24 lakhs. If this happens for the third time then the captain has to pay a fine of 30 lakhs instead of 24. If the mistake happens for the second time, apart from the captain, other players of the team are also fined. Six lakhs or 25 per cent of the match fee of each player of the team, whichever is less, is deducted.

What Does Rule Of Slow Over Rate In IPL 2025?
Each team is expected to complete an innings in 90 minutes or 1 and a half (1 & 30) hours. This includes 2 strategic time-outs of two and a half minutes each. These 90 minutes do not include the time taken for DRS review/umpire review and player injuries.
First Slow Over Rate Case Action
If a team does this for the 1st time, then its captain is fined Rs 12 lakh. No other player in the team is punished. This is the reason why only Delhi captain Rishabh Pant and Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill have been fined right now.
When a team is found guilty of slow over rate for the second time in the same season, the team captain is fined Rs 24 lakh. This time, along with the captain, the rest of the players of the team are also fined. Apart from Rs 24 lakh on the captain, other members of the team including impact substitutes are fined Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee (whichever is less).

Punishment For Being Found Guilty Of Slow Over Rate For 3rd Time
When a team is found guilty of maintaining a Slow Over Rate In IPL for the third time in the same season, the team captain is fined Rs 30 lakh and banned for one match. In addition, the rest of the team members (except the captain) will be fined Rs 12 lakh or 50% of their match fees.
After this, the punishment for this offence remains in abeyance. If a captain hands over captaincy responsibilities to someone else to avoid a possible ban, the ban will apply to him until the BCCI is informed in writing about a formal change in captaincy.
Needless to say, the rules are quite strict and with the possibility of a one-match ban on the captain for the third offence, no team would want to repeat this offence.
